Ridley Scott Says Prometheus 2 Begins Filming In February 2016

09/13/2015

Though Ridley Scott’s latest film, The Martian, is still about a month away from general release, there is already considerable focus on Scott’s upcoming projects. An accomplished veteran filmmaker, his name will be attached (though in different capacities) to two highly anticipated science fiction follow-up films in the coming year: Prometheus 2 (which he will be directing) and the Blade Runner sequel (for which he will serve as a producer), both of which are expected to commence filming in 2016.

With each project involving high-profile actors and complex shooting schedules, there has been speculation that Prometheus 2 and the Blade Runner sequel might be filmed in Australia. It seems filming there is still a distinct possibility, as the director recently confirmed a filming start date and possible location for Prometheus 2.

In an interview with Deadline, Scott stated that pre-production on the film has already begun, though the exact location hasn’t yet been decided. When asked about Prometheus Scott said:

“[Michael] Fassbender will do this one with me, and it’s meant to start production in February. I’m in prep, now. I’ll either shoot in Aussie, or here.”

While we still do not know the exact plot of the film – Michael Green is currently revising the script – it has long been rumored to center around scientist Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and android David (Fassbender), as they travel to the home the Engineers – the creators of humanity. When asked about the plot, Scott made it clear the exploration of philosophical ideas would continue in the next film.

“You can either say, leave the first film alone and jump ahead, but you can’t because it ends on too specific a plot sentence as she says, I want to go where they came from, I don’t want to go back to where I came from … It is pretty grand thinking, and that’s what I want to explore. You’ve got to go back and find those engineers and see what they are thinking. If engineers are the forerunners of us, and therefore were creators of life forms in places that were possible for biology to function, who created that?”

While Prometheus was a divisive movie among critics, the ending was undeniably intriguing, and it’s exciting to think that the answers may be expounded upon before too many years have elapsed between films.

Of course, with such buildup and anticipation, it is possible Prometheus 2 won’t live up to the high expectations. But from Scott’s comments, it is encouraging to hear his sequel is interested in exploring and expanding on ideas presented in the first film. Whether those ideas are going to produce insightful and engaging answers remains to be seen, but hopefully the film will avoid being a retread of what has already been covered.

We’ll bring you more details on Prometheus 2 (such as an official release date) when we have it. The Martian opens in U.S. theaters on October 2nd, 2015
